SUMMARY:CASES Webinar - Empowered or Judged? Exploring Women's Body Image in Gym Spaces
DESCRIPTION:While gyms are often promoted as spaces of empowerment\, health and strength\, for many women they are also sites of surveillance\, judgement and comparison. This webinar will explore some of our recent work that focuses on women’s body image and lived experiences within gym settings\, drawing on mixed-methods data examining how gym culture can be both empower and constrain women’s physical activity and exercise. \nThe webinar will discuss findings from two interconnected international studies exploring women’s perceptions of body image and gym participation\, including a mixed-methods survey and qualitative photo elicitation. These studies show the complex interplay between empowerment and judgement\, how gyms can foster both strength and community\, while also reinforce unrealistic appearance ideals and discomfort in male-dominated spaces. \nWe will also reflect on our use of mixed-methods\, discussing the benefits and challenges of integrating quantitative and qualitative approaches when studying complex psychological phenomena. The study unexpectedly attracted mass media attention from around the world\, highlighting how deeply these experiences resonate with many women and how urgently more inclusive\, psychologically supportive gym environments are needed. \nWe will invite reflection on how theory\, particularly self-objectification and gender performativity\, can deepen our understanding of women’s exercise behaviours. Our session will conclude with practical recommendations for promoting inclusivity and positive body image in gym settings\, highlighting implications for sport and exercise psychology practitioners\, coaches and researchers. \nHosts\nDr Emma Cowley is a sport and exercise Assistant Lecturer at the SHE Research Centre\, TUS Athlone. Her work focuses on women’s (often invisible) experiences in sport and exercise. Drawing on research across the island and internationally\, she explores how systems\, not individuals\, shape women’s opportunities to stay\, lead and thrive in sport. \nKat: Dr Kat Schneider is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Appearance Research at the University of the West of England in Bristol\, UK. Her research interests include body image\, weight bias\, and weight stigma\, primarily within sport and exercise settings. She conducts applied research with academic and industry partners to create social impact and promote accessible\, inclusive\, and supportive movement spaces for all.

SUMMARY:Risk\, Responsibility\, and Readiness: Getting Insured as an S&C Practitioner
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\n\n\n\nStrength & Conditioning is hands-on\, advice-driven\, and high-stakes. This webinar demystifies professional indemnity (PI) for coaches—what it is\, who needs it\, and how IUSCA certification validates competence for insurers. Towergate will explain cover limits\, legal defence/compensation protection\, and practical steps to choose the right level of cover. We’ll show how your IUSCA pathway strengthens your insurability and professional credibility\, so you can coach with confidence and meet organisational requirements. Includes live Q&A and a simple checklist to go from “qualified” to “covered.” \n \nWhat is Professional Indemnity Insurance?  \nProfessional Indemnity insurance covers legal defence and compensation costs for claims made against you if a client suffers financial loss due to a mistake\, error or omission in connection with your professional work.  \n \nWho Needs Professional Indemnity insurance?  \nProfessional Indemnity Insurance is relevant for Strength and Conditioning Practitioners\, fitness instructors\, personal trainers\, and sports performance coaches\, especially those working independently or in private practice. These professionals often provide tailored training programs\,  performance advice\, and physical assessments\, which carry a risk of injury or miscommunication.  \nMany employers\, sports organisations\, and professional bodies require minimum levels of cover\, typically ranging from £1 million to £10 million. Choosing the right level of cover depends on your profession\, the nature of your work\, and the potential financial impact of a mistake.  \n \nMistakes can happen anywhere\, and the financial implications can be significant. Importantly\, there is no legal cap on compensation claims in the UK\, meaning a single incident could cost thousands\, or even millions of pounds. Professional Indemnity will only cover claims up to the policy limit as specified in your policy documentation. \n \nWhy do you need Professional Indemnity Insurance  \nThis type of cover is essential for anyone whose work involves providing advice or services. It offers protection against legal claims arising from mistakes\, oversights\, or professional negligence—whether it’s due to inaccurate guidance\, missed details\, or unintentional errors. This coverage helps safeguard your reputation and financial stability if a client or third party suffers a financial loss as a result of your work. This type of insurance covers legal defence costs and any compensation awarded if you are found to be negligent. Towergate offers flexible cover limits\, 24-hour legal advice\, and immediate policy activation depending on the insurer and your trade or profession—ideal if you need to meet contract requirements quickly. Towergate also provide support for claims\, helping you navigate the process with expert guidance.   \n \nFor more information\, join our ‘Insurance with You in Mind’\, online webinar on  8th October 2025 at 12:30pm.
