Dr Gareth Sandford held the role as Physiology Lead for the Canadian Olympic Road team (marathon and race walk events) at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. In this position, his duties included the physiological optimization of athlete preparation into the hottest Olympic Games
on record. This included the development, training refinement and race-day execution of a) jet-lag and travel strategies in line with final phase training priorities b) athlete pre-during and post cooling interventions, c) fueling to manage race energy requirements d) pacing and race
strategy accounting for the thermoregulatory implications of the weather. This delivered one Olympic Bronze medal, and two top 12 finishes in the women’s marathon, with no heat emergencies across nine road team athletes
